58. What promise does God give us with this commandment, and why does He give it?
God promises those who keep the Fourth Commandment "that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land" (Ephesians 6:3; compare Exodus 20:12). This promise highlights the vital importance of parents in raising children to grow up and become responsible members of society, wise caretakers of God's creation, and faithful witnesses to the Gospel.
