296. How are the Sacraments to be used?
The Sacraments are rightly used when we in faith trust the promises offered and given by Christ through them. "They were instituted to awaken and confirm faith in those who use them. Therefore, we must use the Sacraments in such a way that faith, which believes the promises offered and set forth through the Sacraments, is increased" (AC XIII 3). Faith does not make the sacrament, but it is only through faith that we receive the divinely promised benefit of the sacrament.
