Daily Walk in the Catechism

295. Why are we to treasure the Sacraments, when water, bread, and wine are such ordinary elements?

God delights to use ordinary things to do extraordinary works. "We always teach that the Sacraments and all outward things that God ordains adn institutes should not be considered according to the coarse, outward mask, the way we look at a nutshell. But we respect them because God's Word is included in them" (LC IV 19).

1 Corinthians 1:28 God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are.

Read 2 Kings 5:1-14. By God's promise, plain water from the Jordan had the power to cure Naaman's leprosy.
