Daily Walk in the Catechism

288. Why does Satan concern himself with us?

In arrogance, rage, and spite, Satan sought to claim God's good creation as his own kingdom. His goal is to deceive and destroy the human race. To that end, he seduced Adam and Eve (along with all their descendants) into captivity and made them his allies, subject to eternal condemnation in Hell.

John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Ephesians 2:1-2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

Matthew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

Read Ezekiel 28:11-19, which connects God's judgment against the kingof Tyre's arrogant claims with Satan's creation as an angel and his arrogant rebellion and sin. See also Question 129.
