282. What do we ask God to do for us when we pray this petition?
We pray that
A. our faith in and love for Jesus would not grow cold with unbelief;
Matthew 24:9-14 Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Mark 9:24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!"
B. we would stay alert and on guard against threats to our faith;
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Mark 14:38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
C. our Father would guard us against all sins that come from Satan, the world, and our sinful flesh.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Revelation 3:10 Because you have kept My word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.
Read Genesis 39:1-20, where Jospeh withstood the temptation of Potiphar's wife, and Hebrews 6:4-6, about the danger of falling away from faith.
