Daily Walk in the Catechism

272. For what, then, do we pray in this petition?

We pray that, in humility,

A. we would look to God for what we need each day so that we do not worry about the future;

Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, ... casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

Note: In Exodus 16:17-26, the people of Israel received manna daily, and a double portion the day before the Sabbath.

B. we would receive all our physical blessings with thanksgiving;

Psalm 106:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!

Ephesians 5:19-20 Singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 4:4-5 Everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the Word of God and prayer.

Read Mark 10:46-52, about Jesus healing blind Bartimaeus, and Luke 17:11-19, about the ten lepers.

C. we would find contentment with what we have received.

1 Timothy 6:8 If we have food and glothing, with these we will be content.

John 6:12 When they had eaten their fill, He told His disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost."

Proverbs 30:8-9 Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny You and say, "Who is the LORD?" or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.

Read Luke 12:15-21, about the parable of the rich fool.
