Daily Walk in the Catechism

182. What does it mean that our Lord Jesus is called the Christ?

In the Old Testament, God set certain people apart as prophets, priests, and kings by anointing them with oil. The title Christ or Messiah means "Anointed One." In the New Testament, Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit to be our Prophet, Priest, and King.

Note some other titles for the Son: Redeemer (Isaiah 59:20); Immanuel (Matthew 1:23); Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16); Savior (Luke 2:11; John 4:42); Son of Man (Matthew 25:31); the Word (John 1:14); Lord and God (John 20:28).
