Daily Walk in the Catechism

171. What does this state of humiliation mean for our understanding of Jesus' life?

It highlights the full and deep sense in which Jesus, as our Brother, shared our very human feelings and struggles. For example,

A. as our Brother, Jesus was born in humble circumstances.

Luke 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

B. as our Brother, Jesus chose not to know everything.

Matthew 24:36 But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of Heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

C. as our Brother, Jesus experienced sadness and loss.

Read John 11:38-44. Jesus reacted as a completely human person to the death of His friend Lazarus.

D. as our Brother, Jesus faced human dilemmas and temptations;

Read Matthew 4:1-11. Consider how Jesus struggled to resist Satan's temptations.

Read Matthew 26:36-46. Consider how in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus agonized over His desire to stay alive and His desire to carry out God's will that He drink the cup of wrath and die.

E. as our Brother, Jesus suffered the agony of death and Hell;

Read about Jesus' suffering and death as it was predicted and happened: Isaiah 53:3; Luke 2:7; 4:29; Matthew 2:13; 8:20; John 8:40, 50; Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23; and John 19.

F. as our Brother, Jesus was so poor that He was buried in a borrowed tomb.

Luke 23:52-53 [Joseph] went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid Him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.
