Daily Walk in the Catechism

169. What does the Bible teach about Jesus' resurrection? Why is it so comforting to us?

Scripture teaches that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and appeared bodily to His disciples.

Acts 10:40-41 God raised Him on the third day and made Him to appear, not to all people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:4-8 He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared also to me.

Acts 1:3 He presented Himself alive to them after His suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Christ's resurrection is the comforting testimony that

A. He is the Son of God;

Romans 1:4 [He] was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

B. His teaching is true;

John 18:37 Jesus answered, ... "For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world--to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice."

C. the Father has accepted Christ's sacrifice for the reconciliation of the world;

Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life.

D. all who believe in Crist will rise to eternal life.

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die."

John 14:19 Because I live, you also will live.

1 Corinthians 15:22-23 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at His coming those who belong to Christ.
