Daily Walk in the Catechism

166. How did Jesus rescue me from sin?

A. By His death on the cross, He paid the entire penalty of my sin and guilt.

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree."

1 Peter 1:18-19 Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Romans 4:25 [Jesus] was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

B. By His death on the cross, He fully endured and appeased (propitiated) the wrath of God toward all people (universal atonement), thereby reconciling us to God.

Romans 3:25 God put forward [Jesus] as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith. That was to show God's righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins.

Hebrews 2:17 Therefore He had to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

1 John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

2 Corinthians 5:19 In Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

C. By His death on the cross, He destroyed the power of sin to enslave me.

John 8:34-36 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

1 Peter 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.
