160. Why is it so important for us that the man Jesus, our Brother, is also the Son of God who created the universe?
Because Jesus, our Brother, is the true Son of God,
A. He reveals God to us--for there is no other God than this God who took on our flesh;
John 14:9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know Me, Philip? Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?"
B. He has provided a sufficient ransom and atonement for the sins of the world by His death on the cross;
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
C. He is always with us;
Matthew 28:20 And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Read about the miraculous catch of fish (Luke 5:4-6); Jesus knowing the character of Nathanael (John 1:48); and Jesus and a Samaritan woman (John 4:17-26). Also read Matthew 21:1-7; 26:20-25; and Luke 18:31-33; 22:8-13.
D. He intercedes for us before the Father;
1 Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
1 John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
E. He rules over creation and the Church;
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me."
Ephesians 4:10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all heavens, that He might fill all things.
Read about Jesus' temptation (Matthew 4:1-11); the wedding feast in Cana (John 2:1-11); Jesus rebuking the storm (Luke 8:22-25); Jesus healing a paralytic (Matthew 9:1-8); Jesus calling Lazarus back to life (John 11:38-44); His resurrection from the dead (Matthew 28:6-7); and how all is in subjection to HIm (Hebrews 2:8-9).
F. He has the authority to judge and forgive;
John 5:27 And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
Matthew 9:6 "That you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--He then said to the paralytic--"Rise, pick up your bed and go home."
Acts 17:31 He has fixed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom He has appointed; and of this He ahs given assurance to all by raising Him from the dead.
G. He is worthy of divine honor and glory;
John 20:28 Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!"
John 5:21-23 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in Heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Read Hebrews 1:6; Revelation 5:12-13; Romans 9:5; and 1 John 5:20.
H. He loves us with an everlasting love.
John 17:25-26 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know You, I know You, and these know that You have sent Me. I made known to them Your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them.
