158. What does it mean for us as human creatures that the Son of God has become our Brother?
It means that God has become man--sharing our humanity in all things but sin.
A. Jesus has a human ancestry.
Romans 1:3 [The Gospel concerns God's Son,] who was descended from David according to the flesh.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
Read the genealogy of Christ in Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38.
B. Jesus has a human body and soul.
Luke 24:39 See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Touch Me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.
Matthew 26:38 Then He said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with Me."
C. Jesus has a human sex (He is male).
Matthew 1:22-23 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel."
Luke 2:21 And at the end of eight days, when He was circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
D. Jesus has human needs and feelings.
Matthew 4:2 And after fasting forty days and forty night, He was hungry.
John 11:5 Jesus wept.
John 19:28 Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst."
Hebrews 4:14-16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Read about how Jesus was born (Luke 2), slept (Mark 4:38), suffered, and died (Matthew 26-27).
