156. How did the incarnation take place?
The Holy Spirit fashioned from Mary a true human body and soul for the Son of God.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God."
Matthew 1:20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit."
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Note: The Athanasian Creed (LSB p. 319-320) speaks of the incarnation: "He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in this age. ... Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ ... not by conversion of the divinity into flesh, but by the assumption of the humanity into God" (vv 29, 32-33).
