152. What does it mean to confess that Jesus is "begotten of the Father from eternity"?
The Son has no beginning. He eternally receives life from the Father. Thus, in the Nicene Creed, we confess Jesus as "begotten, not made."
John 1:1-2, 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. ... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Hebrews 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the Word of His power. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
The Nicene Creed also says of the Lord Jesus Christ: "the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father." This emphasizes His uniqueness as the Second Person of the Trinity.
